What a great photo. and what a great engine.
How I'd love to see this engine back in steam and running with a rake of GNR coaches.
well done John.

This is a Patrick Stirling (note spelling!) design, properly known as the GNR G Class "8 foot single" 4-2-2. They were built to be racers, dating from 1870. The wheel size is actually 8 ft 1 in. They were employed on the London to York run, including the 10 am from King's Cross, then unofficially known as the "Flying Scotsman". 37 were built altogether, to which were added ten G2 Class in 1884 and six G3 Class of 1894. The last appeared in 1895, the year in which Patrick Stirling died in office, aged 76. They were continually being modified, and it is doubtful that any two were identical. Probably their main claim to fame was in the 1895 "Races to the North".
