COAL TO YORKSHIRE
These trains had me somewhat baffled. Most of the trains over Woodhead were coal trains from the Yorks coalfields to Fiddlers Ferry power station nr.Warrington. Occasionally though,as in the case pictured here at Hadfield in March 1981, with BR Class 76's Nos 76008/016, there would be a coal train heading in the opposite direction. Was it the grade of coal, unsuitable for Lancs but good enough for Yorks?
