185144 was derailed on December 28 2010 when it struck a large block of ice (about 2 metres high and 8 metres long) that had formed below a ventilation shaft in Summit tunnel, north of Littleborough. The front bogie of the DMU was derailed and the cab struck the tunnel wall, 740 metres from the northern portal. None of the 45 passengers and crew were reported as being injured.
