ChS3-45 Bo-Bo electric locomotive
Photographed on 22 August 2009 at the Rizhsky Vokzal railway museum in Moscow, Russia.
Power: 2,780 kW, Maximum speed: 120 km/h, Length: 17.08 m, Weight: 85 tonnes, Supply: 3 kV DC.
The ChS3 Class were similar to the original ChS1 Class but with more powerful traction motors.
The ChS1 Class had been ordered from Czechoslovakia to operate on the dc electrified lines in Russia that until 1957 had passenger trains hauled by Class VL electric freight locomotives, which were not really suitable.
ChS3 locomotives such as this one, built in 1961, operated on the Moscow-Kharkov-Ilovaiskaya line, the carriages going all the way and only the train crew being changed.
These were the most powerful electric locomotives at that time in Russia. They were built by the Shkoda company in Czechoslovakia, and were based on the Czech 12E Class.
