60163 blasts through Claypole (south of Newark)

With the up Talisman, heading for King's Cross, the locomotive soon to be known as "Tornado" makes a brave sight under the wires of the East Coast Main Line, on 7 February 2009.
This picture alone was well worth my trip over from Sweden!

Absolutely right Peter, fabulous pic.

Sad news for Tornado fans - when she arrived at NRM York for winter maintenance it was found that cracks were found in the two back corners of the boiler foundation ring, among other places. Also several hundred firebox stays need to be replaced (again!). Hence the 2-year old locomotive's boiler was removed in January 2011 and sent back to the manufacturers, the Deutsche Bahn locomotive works at Meiningen in Germany.
This means Tornado will be out of action until at least April 2011, so the main line debut in Brunswick green instead of the LNER apple green shown here will have to wait.
Apparently such cracking was a well known problem on the original Peppercorn A1s and Bulleid Pacifics, which, like Tornado, had all-steel welded fireboxes.
