Gresley A4 Pacific 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower

Photographed at the National Railroad Museum, Green Bay, Wisconsin on 1 August 2003.
I had not seen this locomotive for many years, and the last time was at King's Cross Station, London, so I was very surprised to see it here, in the middle of the USA, as decoration in a cafe!

Lner no. 4496 was originally named golden shuttle, but was renamed to become dwight d. Eisenhower in September 1945, but this was covered until February 1946. Note the unusual red background on the nameplate. In 1948 it was renumbered by british railways to 60008. It was withdrawn from service on July 20, 1963.
dwight d. Eisenhower was restored but not repaired at doncaster 'plant' works and then donated to the national railroad museum and shipped there on may 27th 1964.

General Eisenhower, "Ike" was unable to attend the naming ceremony at Marylebone Station on 27 September 1945, but visited the locomotive at Green Bay on September 18, 1964.

Do you think that if we ask the Americans nicely, we can have our A4 back?

Click to View is a photo of Dominion of Canada with a lot of comments about both these A4's and any likely repatriation. Sadly I have to say that it is extremely unlikely either will return in the foreseeable future.

There is a faint possibility that the NRM might pull off the ultimate coup in 2013 and have all 6 remaining A4'2 together to celebrate the 75th Annivesary of Mallard's speed record.....
Watch this space.....

Saw the locomotive and preparations are underway to transport it from Green Bay to London in 2 weeks. It will be featured on the Discovery Channel's "Big Moves" program and will be returned to Green bay in 2 years.

Latest news is that both locos are on the move.
