Brush Class 31 diesel D5830
Photographed in the sidings at the Great Central Railway (GCR) depot, Loughborough, on 20 January 2006.
D5830 was built by Brush as a 'Type 2' in January 1962 and allocated to Darnall shed in Sheffield. Renumbered to 31297 in May 1974, and again to 31463 in February 1985, it was one of the last of the class to be fitted with electric heating. It was renumbered yet again in May 1990 to 31563 when the heating was disconnected, and was allocated for use on ballast trains.
This engine ended its service life at Toton depot near Nottingham, and following a period in store, it was moved to the GCR, initially as a source of spares for sister engine 31418. However, being in better condition than its sister, the owners decided to restore this engine to full working order.
