2800 Class GWR 2-8-0 no. 2818 at Shildon

Photographed at the NRM Shildon on 11 December 2012. Built in December 1905 at Swindon, withdrawn in October 1963.
These Churchward locomotives were the first 2-8-0 freight engines to be built in the UK, the prototype no. 97 (later no. 2800) being built in 1903. A total of 84 were built.The curved framing over the cylinders and outside steam pipes was added later.
