Maffei S 3/6 no. 3634,
Royal Bavarian State Railway express locomotive photographed in the Deutsche Museum, Munich, Germany, on 3 September 2010.
This 4-6-2 4-cylinder compound locomotive of 1770 hp was manufactured by J.A. Maffei in Munich in 1912. This is the last remaining locomotive of the 18 'd' and 'e' design series which had their driving wheel diameter increased from 1870 to 2000 mm.
This was the type of locomotive used for the "Rheingold Express" that ran in 1928 between the Hook of Holland and Basel, Switzerland.
It was later numbered 18451 in the Deutsche Reichsbahn and in 1951 set a long distance record by covering the 820 km between Hamburg and Munich in record time, including a top speed of 125 km/h.
On being retired in 1954, this locomotive had travelled 2.5 million km.
