24/9/2011. Peak Rail Rowsley.

I have looked but not been able to id this diesel shunter. My knowledge of diesels especially shunters is not as good as it might be so I am in your hands.........

This is a Thomas Hill 'Vanguard' class, 4 wheel diesel hydraulic. It is named 'Charlie'. It was built in 1976 and was used at various industrial sites before arriving at Peak Rail.

You got me on that one. My info was it was a Thomas Hill product, but you may well be right. Its little facts like this that make the whole hobby so interesting.

Thomas Hill sold Sentinel locos but sold their own-build locos under the "Vanguard" brand when standard Sentinels did not fit the customer's needs. After 1971 all loco manufacture transferred to Thomas Hill, even some Sentinels being built there. For further detail on this loco, see www.andrewbriddonlocos.co.uk

And I was under the impression (illusion perhaps) that Rolls Royce took over the Sentinel plant to build heavy diesel engines in the early '60 s. In the mid 80 s, Perkins (then part of Varity Corp.) bought RR Diesels. Of course Rolls group went bust in 1970 ish. Oh heck this is getting so involved. When did Thomas Hil takeover Sentinel production and where ? My memory suggests Rotherham as John says or were Thomas Hill just Headquartered there And just to throw another spanner in the works I reckon the later Sentinel shunters were Rolls Royce powered. Help !

Thomas Hill's Works were to the east of the line between Mexborough and Kilnhurst and on to Rotherham/Sheffield. The passenger route from Doncaster was altered later to make use of the Midland line going via Swinton, Aldwarke Junction and on to Rotherham Masborough.

Another snippet for Peter Goodall: In 1957 Rolls-Royce paid 1.5 million pounds for the 16-acre Sentinel site and plant, inheriting about a dozen incomplete steam shunters, some of which were completed before diesel locomotive production was properly under way.
